Image converter
This free online image converter changes photos and graphics between JPG, PNG, WebP, AVIF and TIFF, turns iPhone HEIC photos and SVG vector files into regular images and saves any image as a PDF. It works in any browser; the conversion runs on our servers.

Formats supported by the image converter
AVIF (AV1 Image File Format)
AVIF is a recent image format based on the AV1 video codec. It offers excellent compression, often smaller than WebP at similar quality, plus transparency and HDR. Modern browsers support it, but many editors, older phones and social platforms still do not.
GIF (Graphics Interchange Format)
GIF is the classic format for short animations and memes. It plays automatically and loops in every browser and chat app, but it is limited to 256 colours per frame and stores video very inefficiently, so animated GIFs are often many times larger than the same clip as MP4.
HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container)
HEIC is the format iPhones and iPads use to save photos. Based on the HEVC video codec, it stores a photo at about half the size of a JPG with similar quality, but Windows, many websites, older Android phones and a lot of software cannot open it without an extra plugin.
JPEG (Joint Photographic Experts Group)
JPEG is the same format as JPG — only the file extension differs. It is the standard for photos, with lossy compression that keeps files small and universal support, but no transparency.
JPG (Joint Photographic Experts Group)
JPG (JPEG) is the standard format for photos. Its lossy compression makes images much smaller with little visible difference, and every device, browser and program opens it. It does not support transparency, and repeated re-saving gradually degrades quality.
PNG (Portable Network Graphics)
PNG uses lossless compression and supports full transparency, which makes it ideal for logos, screenshots, icons and graphics with text or sharp edges. For photographs it produces much larger files than JPG.
SVG (Scalable Vector Graphics)
SVG describes images as shapes and paths in XML rather than pixels, so it scales to any size without blurring. It is ideal for logos, icons and illustrations on the web, but not for photos, and many apps that expect a normal image cannot use it.
TIFF (Tagged Image File Format)
TIFF is a high-fidelity image format used in printing, publishing, scanning and photo archiving. It keeps every detail, supports layers and high bit depths, and is usually saved without lossy compression — so files are large and browsers do not display it.
WebP (WebP)
WebP is Google's modern image format for the web. It supports lossy and lossless compression, transparency and animation, and usually produces smaller files than JPG or PNG. All current browsers show it, but some older programs and apps cannot open it.

Frequently asked questions
- Which image formats does the image converter support?
- JPG, JPEG, PNG, WebP, AVIF and TIFF in any direction; HEIC (iPhone photos) and SVG to any of them; and every image format to PDF.
- Is transparency kept when I convert an image?
- Yes, when the target format supports it: PNG, WebP and AVIF keep transparent backgrounds. JPG has no transparency, so transparent areas are filled with a solid colour.
- Which image format is best for websites?
- WebP and AVIF usually give the smallest files at good quality and are supported by all current browsers. JPG remains the most compatible choice for photos, and PNG for logos and screenshots.
