Converting WebP to JPG: what to know
When you need it
Images saved from websites often turn out to be WebP. Many desktop programs, older image viewers, print services and upload forms still expect JPG, which is why a downloaded picture sometimes won't open or won't attach.
What to expect
A JPG that opens in practically any program. For a photo it is usually somewhat bigger than the WebP at similar quality. JPG has no transparency: if the WebP is a logo or a cut-out on a transparent background, those areas can't stay transparent.
Tip: For images with transparency, convert WebP to PNG instead. For photos, the Image quality setting under Advanced options lets you trade file size against detail.

What is WebP?
WebP is Google's modern image format for the web. It supports lossy and lossless compression, transparency and animation, and usually produces smaller files than JPG or PNG. All current browsers show it, but some older programs and apps cannot open it.
What is JPG?
JPG (JPEG) is the standard format for photos. Its lossy compression makes images much smaller with little visible difference, and every device, browser and program opens it. It does not support transparency, and repeated re-saving gradually degrades quality.
Tips for converting WebP to JPG
- Transparent backgrounds are only kept in formats that support them (PNG, WebP, AVIF); JPG fills them with white.
- For photos, lossy formats keep files small; for logos, screenshots and text, lossless PNG stays sharper.
- Converting an already compressed WebP does not add detail — start from the highest-quality original you have.
- If the image is for a website, a modern format such as WebP or AVIF usually loads faster than JPG.
