Converting HEIC to JPG: what to know
When you need it
Your iPhone saves photos as HEIC to save space, but plenty of places still refuse them: older Windows PCs, many online forms and job portals, print shops, and people reading email on older software. Converting to JPG is the usual fix when a photo has to be uploaded, printed or sent to someone who can't open it.
What to expect
You get a standard JPG that opens everywhere. It is usually bigger than the HEIC, often one and a half to two times, because JPG compresses less efficiently. The rotation is corrected, so a photo taken sideways comes out upright. Only the still image is converted: the moving part of a Live Photo lives in a separate file.
Tip: Converting a whole album? Select up to 20 photos at once and save them all with the Download all button. To stop new photos arriving as HEIC, set the iPhone to Settings → Camera → Formats → Most Compatible.

What is HEIC?
HEIC is the format iPhones and iPads use to save photos. Based on the HEVC video codec, it stores a photo at about half the size of a JPG with similar quality, but Windows, many websites, older Android phones and a lot of software cannot open it without an extra plugin.
What is JPG?
JPG (JPEG) is the standard format for photos. Its lossy compression makes images much smaller with little visible difference, and every device, browser and program opens it. It does not support transparency, and repeated re-saving gradually degrades quality.
Tips for converting HEIC to JPG
- Transparent backgrounds are only kept in formats that support them (PNG, WebP, AVIF); JPG fills them with white.
- For photos, lossy formats keep files small; for logos, screenshots and text, lossless PNG stays sharper.
- Converting an already compressed HEIC does not add detail — start from the highest-quality original you have.
- If the image is for a website, a modern format such as WebP or AVIF usually loads faster than JPG.
