Converting HEIC to PNG: what to know
When you need it
Choose PNG over JPG when the photo is going into an editor and will be saved several times, or when a tool specifically asks for PNG. PNG is lossless, so repeated edits don't add the blocky artefacts that build up each time a JPG is saved again.
What to expect
The PNG keeps every pixel of the decoded photo, but it is large, often several times the size of the HEIC, because PNG is designed for graphics rather than photographs. The rotation is corrected, as with JPG. iPhone photos have no transparency, so the PNG has none either.
Tip: If you only need to share or upload the picture, HEIC to JPG gives a much smaller file with no visible difference.

What is HEIC?
HEIC is the format iPhones and iPads use to save photos. Based on the HEVC video codec, it stores a photo at about half the size of a JPG with similar quality, but Windows, many websites, older Android phones and a lot of software cannot open it without an extra plugin.
What is PNG?
PNG uses lossless compression and supports full transparency, which makes it ideal for logos, screenshots, icons and graphics with text or sharp edges. For photographs it produces much larger files than JPG.
Tips for converting HEIC to PNG
- Transparent backgrounds are only kept in formats that support them (PNG, WebP, AVIF); JPG fills them with white.
- For photos, lossy formats keep files small; for logos, screenshots and text, lossless PNG stays sharper.
- Converting an already compressed HEIC does not add detail — start from the highest-quality original you have.
- If the image is for a website, a modern format such as WebP or AVIF usually loads faster than PNG.
