Converting JPG to PDF: what to know

When you need it

Applications, claims and online forms often accept attachments only as PDF. Turning a photo of a document, a receipt or a signed page into a PDF is the quickest way to meet that requirement.

What to expect

The photo is placed on an A4 page as a one-page PDF. It stays an image: the text in it isn't selectable or searchable, and the PDF is exactly as sharp as the photo.

Tip: Photograph documents flat, in good light and from straight above. For a document with several pages, convert each photo and combine them with Merge PDF.

What is JPG?

JPG (JPEG) is the standard format for photos. Its lossy compression makes images much smaller with little visible difference, and every device, browser and program opens it. It does not support transparency, and repeated re-saving gradually degrades quality.

What is PDF?

PDF preserves a document's exact layout, fonts and images so it looks the same on every device and printer. It is the standard for sharing, signing and archiving final documents, but it is designed to be read rather than edited.

Tips for converting JPG to PDF

  • Each image becomes one page of the PDF; convert several files at once to get several PDFs you can then merge.
  • Start from the sharpest image you have: a PDF cannot add detail that the picture does not contain.
  • A PDF made from an image keeps it as a picture, so its text is not selectable or searchable without OCR.
  • If the PDF is too large to email, run it through the Compress PDF tool afterwards.
