Video converter: an MKV file converted into an MP4 file

AVI (Audio Video Interleave)

AVI is one of the oldest video containers, introduced by Microsoft for Windows. It is simple and still opens on older players and DVD hardware, but it lacks modern features such as efficient streaming and reliable subtitle support, and files tend to be large.

MKV (Matroska Video)

MKV (Matroska) is an open, royalty-free container that can hold any number of video, audio and subtitle tracks plus chapters in a single file. It is popular for films and archives, but many phones, TVs and editors do not open it natively.

MOV (QuickTime File Format)

MOV is Apple's QuickTime container, the default format for iPhone recordings and Final Cut Pro exports. It supports high-quality codecs such as ProRes and HEVC, but outside the Apple ecosystem it is less universally supported than MP4.

MP4 (MPEG-4 Part 14)

MP4 is the most widely used video container. It usually carries H.264 or H.265 video with AAC audio, and it plays on practically every phone, browser, smart TV and editing program, which makes it the safest choice for sharing and uploading.

WebM (WebM)

WebM is an open, royalty-free video format backed by Google and designed for the web. It uses VP8, VP9 or AV1 video with Opus or Vorbis audio, plays natively in modern browsers and keeps files small, though some editors and Apple devices handle it poorly.

Frequently asked questions

Which video formats does the video converter support?
MP4, MKV, AVI, MOV and WebM, in any direction. Every video can also be converted to an audio file (MP3, WAV, FLAC, OGG or AAC) to keep only the sound.
Is there a file size limit?
Free accounts can convert files up to 50MB, 10 times every 24 hours; Pro raises the limit to 1.5GB with unlimited conversions.
Can I turn a video into a GIF?
Yes. MP4, MKV, AVI, MOV and WebM clips can be converted to an animated GIF (the first 30 seconds, 12 frames per second, up to 480 px wide), and GIFs can be turned back into much smaller MP4 or WebM videos.
Which video format should I choose?
MP4 is the safest choice for phones, TVs, social networks and editing apps. WebM is best for websites, and MKV for archiving films with several audio or subtitle tracks.
