Converting TIFF to JPG: what to know

When you need it

Scanners, professional cameras and archives produce TIFF files that are excellent for quality but far too big to email or upload. JPG turns a scan or a photo into something you can share in seconds.

What to expect

The JPG is usually a small fraction of the TIFF's size. JPG is lossy and 8-bit, so it is meant for sharing rather than archiving or further professional editing: keep the TIFF as your master copy.

Tip: If your TIFF holds several pages, as fax and document scans often do, convert TIFF to PDF instead to keep every page in one file.

What is TIFF?

TIFF is a high-fidelity image format used in printing, publishing, scanning and photo archiving. It keeps every detail, supports layers and high bit depths, and is usually saved without lossy compression — so files are large and browsers do not display it.

What is JPG?

JPG (JPEG) is the standard format for photos. Its lossy compression makes images much smaller with little visible difference, and every device, browser and program opens it. It does not support transparency, and repeated re-saving gradually degrades quality.

Tips for converting TIFF to JPG

  • Transparent backgrounds are only kept in formats that support them (PNG, WebP, AVIF); JPG fills them with white.
  • For photos, lossy formats keep files small; for logos, screenshots and text, lossless PNG stays sharper.
  • Converting an already compressed TIFF does not add detail — start from the highest-quality original you have.
  • If the image is for a website, a modern format such as WebP or AVIF usually loads faster than JPG.
