Converting AVIF to JPG: what to know
When you need it
AVIF is a modern format that some websites, phones and cameras now use. Older versions of Windows and Office, many photo editors and plenty of upload forms can't open it yet, so JPG is the reliable way to use the picture anywhere.
What to expect
A JPG that every device and app accepts. It is usually larger than the AVIF, which compresses very efficiently. If the AVIF has transparent areas, they can't stay transparent in a JPG.
Tip: Need to keep a transparent background? Convert AVIF to PNG instead.
AVIF vs JPG: what is the difference?

What is AVIF?
AVIF is a recent image format based on the AV1 video codec. It offers excellent compression, often smaller than WebP at similar quality, plus transparency and HDR. Modern browsers support it, but many editors, older phones and social platforms still do not.
What is JPG?
JPG (JPEG) is the standard format for photos. Its lossy compression makes images much smaller with little visible difference, and every device, browser and program opens it. It does not support transparency, and repeated re-saving gradually degrades quality.
Tips for converting AVIF to JPG
- Transparent backgrounds are only kept in formats that support them (PNG, WebP, AVIF); JPG fills them with white.
- For photos, lossy formats keep files small; for logos, screenshots and text, lossless PNG stays sharper.
- Converting an already compressed AVIF does not add detail — start from the highest-quality original you have.
- If the image is for a website, a modern format such as WebP or AVIF usually loads faster than JPG.
