Converting PNG to WebP: what to know
When you need it
Website owners convert PNG to WebP to make pages load faster: screenshots, illustrations and product images on transparent backgrounds get much lighter while looking the same. Every current browser displays WebP.
What to expect
Transparency is kept. A photographic PNG typically shrinks a lot; flat graphics with few colours shrink less, and tiny icons may barely change. The Image quality setting under Advanced options controls how much detail is traded for size.
Tip: Keep the original PNG as your master copy: you can always make a new WebP from it at a different quality.
PNG vs WebP: what is the difference?

What is PNG?
PNG uses lossless compression and supports full transparency, which makes it ideal for logos, screenshots, icons and graphics with text or sharp edges. For photographs it produces much larger files than JPG.
What is WebP?
WebP is Google's modern image format for the web. It supports lossy and lossless compression, transparency and animation, and usually produces smaller files than JPG or PNG. All current browsers show it, but some older programs and apps cannot open it.
Tips for converting PNG to WebP
- Transparent backgrounds are only kept in formats that support them (PNG, WebP, AVIF); JPG fills them with white.
- For photos, lossy formats keep files small; for logos, screenshots and text, lossless PNG stays sharper.
- Converting an already compressed PNG does not add detail — start from the highest-quality original you have.
- If the image is for a website, a modern format such as WebP or AVIF usually loads faster than JPG or PNG.
