Formats supported by the document converter

Document converter: a Word file converted into a PDF file

CSV (Comma-Separated Values)

CSV stores table data as plain text, one row per line with values separated by commas. Every spreadsheet, database and programming language reads it, which makes it ideal for importing and exporting data, but it keeps no formulas, formatting or multiple sheets.

Word (97-2003) (Word Binary File Format)

DOC is the binary format used by Microsoft Word 97–2003. Current versions of Word still open it, but it has been replaced by DOCX, which is smaller, more robust and better supported by other programs.

Word (Office Open XML Document)

DOCX is the default Microsoft Word format since Word 2007. It is an open, XML-based standard that keeps text fully editable with styles, tables, images and comments, and it also opens in Google Docs and Apple Pages.

OpenDocument (OpenDocument Text)

ODT is the OpenDocument text format, an international open standard and the default in free office suites. It is fully editable and vendor-neutral, and Microsoft Word and Google Docs can open it, sometimes with small layout differences.

PDF (Portable Document Format)

PDF preserves a document's exact layout, fonts and images so it looks the same on every device and printer. It is the standard for sharing, signing and archiving final documents, but it is designed to be read rather than edited.

PowerPoint (97-2003) (PowerPoint Binary File Format)

PPT is the binary format of Microsoft PowerPoint 97–2003. Modern PowerPoint still opens it, but PPTX has replaced it with smaller files and better compatibility with other presentation apps.

PowerPoint (Office Open XML Presentation)

PPTX is the default Microsoft PowerPoint format since PowerPoint 2007. It keeps slides, layouts, images, notes and animations editable and also opens in Google Slides and Apple Keynote.

RTF (Rich Text Format)

RTF is a simple, plain-text-based document format that keeps basic formatting such as fonts, bold, italics and tables. Almost every word processor opens it, which makes it a safe exchange format, but it does not handle complex layouts well.

Text (Plain Text)

TXT is plain, unformatted text. It is the most universal file type there is — any device and any program can open it — but it keeps no fonts, images, tables or layout.

Excel (97-2003) (Excel Binary File Format)

XLS is the binary format of Microsoft Excel 97–2003. It is limited to 65,536 rows and 256 columns per sheet and has been replaced by XLSX, though some older systems and accounting tools still export it.

Excel (Office Open XML Spreadsheet)

XLSX is the default Microsoft Excel format since Excel 2007. It stores worksheets, formulas, charts and formatting in an open XML-based package and also opens in Google Sheets and Apple Numbers.

Frequently asked questions

Which formats does the document converter support?
PDF, Word (DOCX and DOC), Excel (XLSX and XLS), PowerPoint (PPTX and PPT), OpenDocument Text, RTF, CSV and TXT. PDF files can also be exported as JPG or PNG images.
Will the layout be preserved?
Usually, yes. Fonts that are not installed on our servers are replaced with similar ones, and very complex layouts or macros may shift, so check the converted file before sharing it.
Can I edit a PDF after converting it to Word?
Text-based PDFs become a Word document that keeps the look of the page, but the text arrives in separate text boxes (about one per line) rather than flowing paragraphs, and tables are not rebuilt. You can edit the text, though you will have to rearrange it by hand. Scanned PDFs are images, so their text only becomes editable with OCR.
