Converting PNG to JPG: what to know
When you need it
Photos saved as PNG, such as camera exports or scans, can be huge. Converting them to JPG makes them small enough to email, to upload to a form with a size limit or to post online.
What to expect
For photographs the JPG is usually a fraction of the PNG's size with no visible difference at high quality. Two things change: JPG has no transparency, and sharp-edged graphics such as text, charts or app screenshots can show soft halos around the edges.
Tip: For screenshots and graphics with text, keep PNG or use WebP. For photos, choose High (85) or Maximum (95) under Advanced options.

What is PNG?
PNG uses lossless compression and supports full transparency, which makes it ideal for logos, screenshots, icons and graphics with text or sharp edges. For photographs it produces much larger files than JPG.
What is JPG?
JPG (JPEG) is the standard format for photos. Its lossy compression makes images much smaller with little visible difference, and every device, browser and program opens it. It does not support transparency, and repeated re-saving gradually degrades quality.
Tips for converting PNG to JPG
- Transparent backgrounds are only kept in formats that support them (PNG, WebP, AVIF); JPG fills them with white.
- For photos, lossy formats keep files small; for logos, screenshots and text, lossless PNG stays sharper.
- Converting an already compressed PNG does not add detail — start from the highest-quality original you have.
- If the image is for a website, a modern format such as WebP or AVIF usually loads faster than JPG.
