Converting JPG to PNG: what to know
When you need it
Some editors, design tools and upload forms ask for PNG, and PNG is the safer format for an image you are going to edit and save repeatedly, because every JPG re-save loses a little more quality.
What to expect
The PNG looks identical to the JPG, since conversion can't restore detail the JPG compression already removed, but the file will be several times larger. The image gains no transparency by itself; PNG simply makes it possible to add it later in an editor.
Tip: If you are trying to make the file smaller, this is the wrong direction: JPG to WebP will shrink it instead.

What is JPG?
JPG (JPEG) is the standard format for photos. Its lossy compression makes images much smaller with little visible difference, and every device, browser and program opens it. It does not support transparency, and repeated re-saving gradually degrades quality.
What is PNG?
PNG uses lossless compression and supports full transparency, which makes it ideal for logos, screenshots, icons and graphics with text or sharp edges. For photographs it produces much larger files than JPG.
Tips for converting JPG to PNG
- Transparent backgrounds are only kept in formats that support them (PNG, WebP, AVIF); JPG fills them with white.
- For photos, lossy formats keep files small; for logos, screenshots and text, lossless PNG stays sharper.
- Converting an already compressed JPG does not add detail — start from the highest-quality original you have.
- If the image is for a website, a modern format such as WebP or AVIF usually loads faster than PNG.
