Converting PDF to JPG: what to know

When you need it

Turning PDF pages into images lets you post a flyer on social media, drop a page into a presentation, preview a document on a phone or attach a page where only images are accepted.

What to expect

Every page is rendered at 150 dpi: sharp on screen and fine for small prints. A one-page PDF comes back as a single JPG; a longer one comes back as a ZIP with one image per page (page-001.jpg, page-002.jpg…). The free plan converts up to 20 pages per PDF, and Pro up to 100.

Tip: Only need a few pages of a long PDF? Take them out first with Split PDF and convert just those.

What is PDF?

PDF preserves a document's exact layout, fonts and images so it looks the same on every device and printer. It is the standard for sharing, signing and archiving final documents, but it is designed to be read rather than edited.

What is JPG?

JPG (JPEG) is the standard format for photos. Its lossy compression makes images much smaller with little visible difference, and every device, browser and program opens it. It does not support transparency, and repeated re-saving gradually degrades quality.

Tips for converting PDF to JPG

  • A one-page PDF gives you a single JPG image; a longer one gives you a ZIP with one JPG per page, named page-001, page-002 and so on, in page order.
  • The free plan converts PDF files of up to 20 pages at a time. For a longer one, take the pages you need with the Split PDF tool first.
  • Each page is drawn at 150 dpi, which is sharp on screen and good enough for most printing.
  • Text in a PDF becomes pixels in the JPG images, so it can no longer be selected or searched.
