What is OpenDocument?
ODT is the OpenDocument text format, an international open standard and the default in free office suites. It is fully editable and vendor-neutral, and Microsoft Word and Google Docs can open it, sometimes with small layout differences.
What is Word?
DOCX is the default Microsoft Word format since Word 2007. It is an open, XML-based standard that keeps text fully editable with styles, tables, images and comments, and it also opens in Google Docs and Apple Pages.
Tips for converting OpenDocument to Word
- Fonts that are not installed on our servers are replaced with similar ones, so check the layout of the converted file.
- Scanned documents are images: converting a scanned OpenDocument will not make its text editable (that requires OCR).
- Complex layouts, macros and embedded objects may not survive every conversion; review the Word before sharing it.
- Password-protected files cannot be converted — remove the password first.
