Converting Excel to CSV: what to know
When you need it
CSV is the common language of data: online banking, shop platforms, CRMs, mailing tools and databases import it, and every programming language reads it in a line. Converting a spreadsheet to CSV is how you hand its data to another system.
What to expect
Only cell values are exported: formulas become their results, and formatting, colours, charts and comments are dropped. A CSV holds a single table, so only the first sheet of the workbook is converted.
Tip: If the data you need is on another sheet, move that sheet to the first position in Excel before converting.

What is Excel?
XLSX is the default Microsoft Excel format since Excel 2007. It stores worksheets, formulas, charts and formatting in an open XML-based package and also opens in Google Sheets and Apple Numbers.
What is CSV?
CSV stores table data as plain text, one row per line with values separated by commas. Every spreadsheet, database and programming language reads it, which makes it ideal for importing and exporting data, but it keeps no formulas, formatting or multiple sheets.
Tips for converting Excel to CSV
- Fonts that are not installed on our servers are replaced with similar ones, so check the layout of the converted file.
- Scanned documents are images: converting a scanned Excel will not make its text editable (that requires OCR).
- Complex layouts, macros and embedded objects may not survive every conversion; review the CSV before sharing it.
- Password-protected files cannot be converted — remove the password first.
