Converting CSV to Excel: what to know
When you need it
CSV exports from banks, shops and apps can open as one cramped column in some programs. As an Excel workbook the data sits in proper columns, ready to sort, filter, chart and share.
What to expect
Each value goes into its own cell, and numbers and dates are recognised so you can calculate with them straight away. Values that look like numbers but aren't, such as product codes, postcodes or phone numbers with leading zeros, can lose those zeros.
Tip: If leading zeros matter, check those columns after converting and format them as text in Excel.

What is CSV?
CSV stores table data as plain text, one row per line with values separated by commas. Every spreadsheet, database and programming language reads it, which makes it ideal for importing and exporting data, but it keeps no formulas, formatting or multiple sheets.
What is Excel?
XLSX is the default Microsoft Excel format since Excel 2007. It stores worksheets, formulas, charts and formatting in an open XML-based package and also opens in Google Sheets and Apple Numbers.
Tips for converting CSV to Excel
- Fonts that are not installed on our servers are replaced with similar ones, so check the layout of the converted file.
- Scanned documents are images: converting a scanned CSV will not make its text editable (that requires OCR).
- Complex layouts, macros and embedded objects may not survive every conversion; review the Excel before sharing it.
- Password-protected files cannot be converted — remove the password first.
