Converting MOV to GIF: what to know
When you need it
MOV is what iPhones and Macs record, screen recordings included. Turning a short MOV into a GIF is the quickest way to show a bug, a feature or a funny moment in a chat, a support ticket or a slide where video won't autoplay.
What to expect
The same rules as any video to GIF: the first 30 seconds, 12 frames per second, at most 480 pixels wide, 256 colours and no sound. Vertical phone videos stay vertical.
Tip: Screen recordings of apps convert especially well because of their flat colours. Record only the relevant part of the screen so the GIF stays readable at 480 pixels.
MOV vs GIF: what is the difference?

What is MOV?
MOV is Apple's QuickTime container, the default format for iPhone recordings and Final Cut Pro exports. It supports high-quality codecs such as ProRes and HEVC, but outside the Apple ecosystem it is less universally supported than MP4.
What is GIF?
GIF is the classic format for short animations and memes. It plays automatically and loops in every browser and chat app, but it is limited to 256 colours per frame and stores video very inefficiently, so animated GIFs are often many times larger than the same clip as MP4.
Tips for converting MOV to GIF
- GIFs have no sound and at most 256 colours, so the GIF will look flatter than the MOV and play silently.
- Keep clips short: a few seconds of GIF can weigh more than a minute of video.
- If the clip is for a website or a chat app, an MP4 or WebM usually looks better and loads faster than a GIF.
- Keep the original video; converting to GIF is not reversible without loss.
