Converting FLAC to MP3: what to know
When you need it
FLAC keeps CD-quality audio without loss, but many car stereos, older music players, some phones and smart speakers don't play it, and the files fill storage quickly. MP3 copies are the practical choice for everyday listening.
What to expect
The MP3 is typically a fraction of the FLAC's size, and at 320 kbps the difference is very hard to hear on most equipment. Tags such as title, artist and album are usually carried over.
Tip: Keep your FLAC files as the master library and convert copies for your devices: going from MP3 back to FLAC can't restore what was removed.
FLAC vs MP3: what is the difference?
| FLAC | MP3 | |
|---|---|---|
| Full name | Free Lossless Audio Codec | MPEG-1 Audio Layer III |
| Type | Lossless audio | Compressed audio |
| Compression | Lossless | Lossy |
| Developed by | Xiph.Org Foundation | Fraunhofer IIS / MPEG |

What is FLAC?
FLAC compresses audio without discarding anything: decoded, it is bit-for-bit identical to the original, yet typically 40–60% smaller than WAV. It is the favourite of audiophiles and music archives, although some older players and Apple apps do not support it.
What is MP3?
MP3 is the classic compressed audio format. It removes sounds the ear barely notices to shrink files to roughly a tenth of CD size, and it plays on every phone, car stereo and music app, which is why it remains the default for music and podcasts.
Tips for converting FLAC to MP3
- Converting a compressed file such as MP3 to a lossless format does not restore detail already removed; it only makes the file larger.
- For music, a lossless source (WAV or FLAC) gives the best result when you convert to MP3.
- Check that your player, car stereo or editing app supports MP3 before converting a whole library.
- Keep the original FLAC file as a backup until you are happy with the converted audio.
