Converting MP3 to WAV: what to know

When you need it

Some audio editors, CD burning tools, phone systems, hardware samplers and transcription services require WAV. Converting an MP3 gives you a file they accept.

What to expect

The MP3 is decoded to uncompressed WAV, about ten times larger. It sounds exactly like the MP3: converting can't restore detail that MP3 compression removed, but it does prevent further losses while you edit.

Tip: If the audio is only for listening, keep the MP3. WAV makes sense when software requires it or when you are about to edit the sound.

What is MP3?

MP3 is the classic compressed audio format. It removes sounds the ear barely notices to shrink files to roughly a tenth of CD size, and it plays on every phone, car stereo and music app, which is why it remains the default for music and podcasts.

What is WAV?

WAV stores audio as uncompressed PCM, exactly as it was recorded. That makes it the standard for recording, editing and mastering, where no quality can be lost, but a WAV file is about ten times larger than the same audio in MP3.

Tips for converting MP3 to WAV

  • Converting a compressed file such as MP3 to a lossless format does not restore detail already removed; it only makes the file larger.
  • For music, a lossless source (WAV or FLAC) gives the best result when you convert to WAV.
  • Check that your player, car stereo or editing app supports WAV before converting a whole library.
  • Keep the original MP3 file as a backup until you are happy with the converted audio.
