Converting WAV to FLAC: what to know
When you need it
FLAC is the standard for archiving music and recordings without loss: it shrinks WAV files substantially while keeping every bit of the audio, and it supports proper tags for title, artist and album.
What to expect
The FLAC often takes around half to two thirds of the WAV's size, depending on the material, and decodes back to exactly the same audio. Quiet recordings and speech compress more; dense, loud music compresses less.
Tip: Most music players, phones and editors play FLAC; if a particular device doesn't, keep a WAV or MP3 copy just for it.
WAV vs FLAC: what is the difference?

What is WAV?
WAV stores audio as uncompressed PCM, exactly as it was recorded. That makes it the standard for recording, editing and mastering, where no quality can be lost, but a WAV file is about ten times larger than the same audio in MP3.
What is FLAC?
FLAC compresses audio without discarding anything: decoded, it is bit-for-bit identical to the original, yet typically 40–60% smaller than WAV. It is the favourite of audiophiles and music archives, although some older players and Apple apps do not support it.
Tips for converting WAV to FLAC
- Converting a compressed file such as MP3 to a lossless format does not restore detail already removed; it only makes the file larger.
- For music, a lossless source (WAV or FLAC) gives the best result when you convert to FLAC.
- Check that your player, car stereo or editing app supports FLAC before converting a whole library.
- Keep the original WAV file as a backup until you are happy with the converted audio.
